「Keep Challenging !」
Message☆ My friend and neighbor, Shima, asked me for some comments about how I and my wife Alis are living our lives in retirement. So hre goes. It helped to grow into retirement somewhat gradually. This process began in 1989 when I was eligible for an early pension from my employer. For the next 7 years I continued to service my key clients while transferring the less demanding clients to other Prudential agents. During this time frame I was mentally and physically able devote time to try new activities as well as expand on old interests. I was elected president of our lake association and discharged those duties satisfactorily but that was not one of my favorites. I am by nature a solo player, even a loner; but not a person with administrative ability. So I had to work extra hard at that but..it was a Challenge. Other more fun activities entered into my life as the list of hobbies would confirm. Whatever we do that brings enjoyment seems to sit on the cornerstone of Challenge>. In 1996 I retired completely and continued the exploration of what it was and what it could be. I no longer had a professional responsibility to fall back on. It was time to play for keeps! I and my wife have been blessed with physical abilities that allowed experimentation of some more strenuous activities. We have always been physically able to do things and that has helped tremendously in finding our ways of retirement in this physically Challenging environment. Thre are summer activities and there are winter activities. We can swim in the lake we live on and in the winter we can cross country ski on it. A word about my wife Alis activities. She lives and has lived for the past few years for the fun of doing her own gardening/landscaping. But alas, now her knees have worn out and knee replacement surgery is planned for this November. The other major interest in her life is her profession as a mental health therapist. She started her own office 9 years ago and is still counseling, although on the reduced pasis of every other week and then only for 4 days. We, as many folks, have dealt with family tragedies, money problems and setbacks that had to be overcome. Now in our time of retirement with the limitations of old age coming into play we can look back and know that we are blessed to have this kind of life together and with our daughters and grandchildren. We do have a strong faith and it has seen us through the hard times. Now that faith allows us to give thanks to God for all the blessings bestowed us. And....we are grateful to have Shima as a friend and neighbor. |
